Facing the street, a high garden wall with glass shards jutting out from a cement topping has always been something I associated with Den Haag.
I remember the first time I really noticed this type of colourful decoration; we were visiting my grandfather and that wall was one or two streets away from where he lived.
As I discovered later this building habit was not exclusive to my grandparents’ neighbourhood. I also saw them on other visits to the city of my parents’ roots.
Whatever thickness, length and density it was always glass. Small thick brown chips, sometimes green and crooked, some transparent and straight sticking out like little triangles. A mix of more than two colours was rare and required a close inspection if you had the chance.
To a small boy this unusual function of glass communicated something other than attractive colours and ‘sharp’ but its function was beyond his world and I don’t recall him ever asking anyone about it.
What he did know was that it was part of a personal collection of mysterious traits and attractions that were tied to the place he left when he was nearly four. Aware of differences with his daily surroundings, the walls with glass were quite foreign, like the alarm booths with a dialless phone to reach either police or fire brigade and for that matter the tap water with its quaint smell and taste whether it came plain, as tea or was used to make lemonade; no matter who he visited there.
The attraction was in the differences that in their own right became familiar and trusted like the fierce electric doors that made loud robot noises when he went on and off the tram to visit family. Grandparents with impressive stories, uncles with model airplanes they sometimes gave away, aunts that were generous in showing their love for him and cousins with toys and interests that opened universes of curiosity and play.

Nearly everything typical from then is gone now but not those shard sprinkled walls. I still see some of them here and there and this particular one I pass almost daily.
I was happy to shoot it while it looked well lit and in marvelous sync with clouds that can’t evoke a single memory whatsoever.

the print is not coated with a UV protection solution or similar spray.
Each copy of this particular image is printed with similar printer settings (and relevant icc profile) to ensure consistency of quality and characteristics between all individual prints.

All acid free paper has a high longevity. *4* Combined with the described ultrachrome inks, the print’s longevity
does not sacrifice the intended appearance of the final printed image.

The image you see here on the web site is optimized for screen display. It has a low resolution that allows easy loading on the web site.
Your print is optimized for the precise combination of its specific paper type and designated printer (+ inks).

Actual print stability will vary according to media, printed image, display conditions, light intensity, humidity and atmospheric conditions, as well as conditions inflicted by handling of the print. Oba’s are Optical Brightening Agents that can ‘yellow’ the paper over time.

The longevity of the paper under optimal conditions is rated at several hundred years before quality reduces. Longevity depends on storage conditions, display and handling, air quality, ambient temperatures and -humidity.
Handling: use of cotton gloves is recommended, even when only touching the unprinted areas.
Display: display prints behind UV glass and out of direct sunlight to protect your images.

Differences between print and screen reflect the general differences between types of media. Other differences occur by factors such as -but not limited to- settings and characteristics of your particular viewing device or the lighting conditions in which images is viewed.
A print usually differs in saturation and/or contrast. Prints always have a higher resolution (360 DPI) than their web representation on photosence.com (72 DPI).

In my experience, printing at 360 dots per inch at slow speed gives my choices of paper the best level of ink-spraying, -blending and -drying.
Up to this point the prints do no exhibit additional softness by swelling of paper fibres due to ink wetness (dot gain) or any bronzing caused by too much ink.

If ever needed, DPI settings for prints can be stepped down. (in steps of 90 dpi on the current machine). As Epson printers do not use heat to ‘spit’ the ink on the printing paper, my prints are particularly free of so called satelite dots that can cause the printed image to soften.
